Low carb, running and hypothyroidism
I hope that over the next few months I'll be good about documenting my journey as I try to transition to a low carb diet and continue to run and to top it off I've been diagnosed with hypothyroidism (I'm on medication). Which might explain why it has been some damn hard to lose weight. I probably won't be updating this blog every day but at least once a week I hope to. As I've looked for information on hypothyroidism for men I've not found a lot so if at least one person happens upon this and it helps them it will be worth it.
So why low carb you might be asking? There is a couple of reason's. My wife is doing low carb to drop some weight and I'm going to be there to help support her. It should be easier to make meals. The other reason is that when you find information about losing weight with hypothyroidism a lot of it is low carb related or AIP (Auto Immune Protocol). With AIP you are eliminating a bunch of stuff for a period of time to see what triggers you have. I may end up there but for now I'm not going to go there. My hope is to drop some weight (about 30lbs) but also to feel better. I don't know if it's possible but I'd also like to see if losing some weight will get me off of my blood pressure meds and possibly lower the dose of medication I'm on for hypo.
Again information is sparse for hypo, but one of the things I've seen is that any repetitive task, such as running, should be dropped (as well as HIIT workouts). These two types of exercise increase cortisol which is not good for those with hypo. I've reached the point where I really enjoy running so I want to see if I can continue to do that. So I'm going to continue to run in some aspect if I can. However the main reason that I got into running was to try and lose some weight and get my blood pressure down. However neither of those happened so maybe taking running off of the plate will happen. The alternative to this is just lifting heavy weights. Which I've done before!
Tomorrow starts day one of low carbing it. I don't think it will be that hard but for me it will be a matter of not getting tired of the same old thing AND coming up with new interesting things to eat. That's going to be key.
